Ironically, the difficulties aren’t due to lack of readership, but rather to certain economic dynamics. Papers still charge far more for print advertising than online advertising, yet readers are rapidly switching to online versions of their favorite newspapers. Meanwhile, though, the high overhead involved in producing and delivering traditional newspapers is a heavy ankle-weight for the industry.

SYLVA-WestCare Health System, based in Sylva, recently announced that it was facing “significant financial challenges”, and that it will eliminate 90 jobs over the next 18 months.
The system includes Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva and Bryson City’s Swain County Hospital.
