Financial trouble in the Smokies

REGIONAL–Business Tennessee columnist Allison Gorman takes the broad view of financial troubles in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in this piece.

She notes that unlike most national parks, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not charge an entry fee. A quote:

… the park won’t propose a fee … because of long-held local sentiment against it. Vicki Simms, executive director of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce, says while her city has stepped up support for the Smokies, the park’s open gates reflect a debt to the communities that helped finance it in 1934. “It was a noble beginning, and it’s something that this national park just has to accept. [A fee] really isn’t up for debate.”
