Haire’s school calendar revision bill rebuffed

REGIONAL-N.C. Rep. Phil Haire’s recent effort to give far west school systems more leeway to change school calendars has been rebuffed.

Current statewide law, backed by the strong tourism industry, says school must end each year by June 10, and begin no earlier than August 25.

Western counties struggle to make up days missed due to inclement weather, though, and Haire and a few other legislators argued that they should be exempted.

A house committee disagreed yesterday.
