Jackson County Farmer’s Market
I started this market, oh, maybe five or six years ago. It got off to a slow start, and has been growing slowly over the years. Last year was our best one yet: in the peak of the growing season, we had 16 vendors selling at the market. This year Susannah Patty is taking over as the market manager, and guess what? This year on opening day – May 3rd, we had over 16 vendors!
“What were they selling?” ask my friends. I wrote a list just so I could entice you, but I misplaced it. From memory, here’s what they had:
- several varieties of lettuce
- spinach
- kale
- mustard greens and other leafy greens
- radishes
- all varieties of vegetable starts (heirloom tomatoes, squash, melons, eggplants, and much more)
- honey and a honey-bee display, beeswax and candles
- jam
- eggs
- fresh and dried culinary herbs (i.e. basil, parsley, sage, etc.)
- medicinal herbs (i.e. feverfew, catnip, and more)
- flower starts
- local plants and shrubs
- tobacco plant starts
- eucalyptus plant starts, and more plant starts – many I am forgetting
- hand-made bags
- crochets gifts and clothing
- locally-made soap
- wood-turned bowls
- Soon there will be goat’s milk soap and lotion
- granola
- hand-crafted books
- broccoli
- snowpeas, and more
Come check out the market. Support your local growers. Embark in the pleasures of becoming a locavore: reduce your food print, enjoy the taste of fresh food, reap the nutritional benefits of fresh food, meet local growers, become a part of the community, and find affordable organic goods and crafts. By making your trip to the market a regular event (perhaps preceding your trip to the grocery store) you will ensure the future life of the market in your community.
The Jackson County Farmers Market takes place each Saturday from 9am until noon at the Municipal Parking Lot on Railroad Ave., Sylva. The lot is adjacent the site of Bridge Park, the drive for which the Market is involved and which will soon be the market’s home.
