Samford ready for Southern Conference
From the Chattanooga Times Free Press:
Samford … was founded in 1841 as Howard College, [and] officially joined the SoCon on July 1, leaving the Ohio Valley Conference after five years and giving the SoCon, the fifth-oldest Division I conference in the country, a dozen members.
Samford has been on the SoCon’s radar for years. In fact, the Bulldogs were among the finalists when Elon was added in 2003.
Samford is likely to compete right away in most sports — its facilities will rank among the best in the SoCon except for its football stadium — but the Bulldogs might struggle for a few years on the gridiron.
Both of the recent SoCon polls picked Samford to finish last this year. The Bulldogs went 4-7 in ‘07, with wins over Tennessee Tech (59-52), Southeast Missouri (26-21), Presbyterian (34-24) and West Alabama (23-21). A second common opponent with Western Carolina (aside from Presbyterian) was Eastern Kentucky, which topped Samford 43-20. Samford’s money game was at Georgia Tech, and resulted in a 69-14 loss.
