Sports: WCU Athletics Director says things aren’t all bad in football

CULLOWHEE–With the Western Carolina football out to an 0-5 start in coach Dennis Wagner’s second year, criticism from the two or three reporters–all at the same paper–who cover the Cats, is building, as is discontent among Catamount alumni who take football seriously.

The lightning rod is Athletics Director Chip Smith, who released this statement of support for Wagner and his program.

Key among his points are that half the team is made up of freshmen, and the staff, in its first full recruiting year, pulled a top-five recruiting class.

The new staff needs time – even to be a mid-pack SoCon team. Keep in mind, WCU has never been very good. That is correct, I said never. Even the “legendary” Bob Waters won only half his games. Sure, they went to the nat. title game…and lost.
